Sound Guy, Sounds Off – Using Behringer X32 & iPads

Have you ever been out watching live music and notice that person in the back of the room? They are sitting behind a desk that looks like it contains a NASA mission control room’s worth of buttons, sliders, and lights? That is probably what comes to mind when most people hear the words “sound guy”, “sound engineer”, or similar titles. That is a completely reasonable assumption as that is exactly how production has been done since the advent of the relative technology. Fun DMC does things a little differently. Anyone who has been to a show or event with Fun DMC knows exactly how we like to turn convention on its head. We take songs that most bands consider sacred and perfect and mash them up with others. Our vocalists are often off the stage and in the crowd. Our main goal is not just to entertain the crowd, rather, we focus on engaging with the crowd. We strive to provide people the feeling that they are part of the show and experience rather than just another spectator.

One other thing we do differently is much less obvious or noticeable.

That sound person sitting behind mission control is nowhere to be seen. In fact, you may be standing next to or sitting at a table with the person running sound without realizing it. We run a system (Behringer X32) that allows us to run our sound mixer with an iPad. While this may not seem like a big deal or game changer on the surface, it is actually a huge advantage. Our method of production allows us to monitor sound everywhere in a venue rather than being confined to one place. This allows us to better control volume and offer the highest quality of production possible in every venue. It allows me, personally, to both run sound and take photos of the event at the same time. We can also work to correct any issues the band may encounter on the fly without having to stop the show or abandon the sound mixer. The aforementioned advantages are secondary. The real advantage to the way we run production is the flexibility it offers to those who book our services. The lack of a sound booth and long runs of thick cable can be huge advantages in smaller venues where space is limited and valuable. We don’t require extra electrical cable runs. This can become a big issue in relation to outdoor or tent events.

The last big plus to cover from our method of sound production is one of aesthetics. Wedding receptions are a huge undertaking. Brides and grooms spend a massive amount of time, effort, and money to bring their vision to life. These already beautiful venues are made exceptional with planning and hard work. We take pride on being a positive addition visually to the atmosphere of any event. Needing long cable runs and a dedicated sound booth can have a detracting effect on the hard work that has gone into creating the perfect atmosphere and ambiance for an event. We strive to be both visually stunning on the stage and invisible in the background.

In closing, our production methods achieve three goals for us:

  1. Provide the highest possible quality of production.
  2. Allow us the maximum amount of flexibility.
  3. Provide a seamless and engaging experience to our customers and fans.
