Matt Rigor SmashtagWhat got you started playing bass?

About 5 years ago, I was giving an opportunity to form an original band, Pattern Grey, with a good friend. I had owned a guitar since 1998 but never really did anything more than mess around and create my own songs. I decided I was going to play bass and borrowed my friend’s. I played a show less than a month later and owned my own bass and rig a month after that.

What bass players inspire you?

Any bass player that grooves especially in Motown, Funk and R&B. I’m always on the hunt for new inspirations but definitely James Jamerson and Carol Kaye.

What song has challenged you the most?

A lot of songs have challenged me especially since I’m new. The most recent one is I’m trying to transcribe Cream’s “Crossroads.” The fun and challenging part about learning songs is to explore how each note is played.

What’s your favorite song to play in your current band’s set?

Currently, “1901” by Phoenix and “Somebody Told Me” by The Killers

What’s the most overplayed song?

There is only one song I have ever considered truly over played – “The Sign” by Ace of Base. I still vividly remember when it was number 1 on the charts and the DJ doing the weekly countdown skipped it and ended the show. It still makes sick to my stomach.

As far as cover bands, if you play a song and people like it, wear it out!

What’s the most memorable thing that happened to you at a gig?

There are so many! I’d say the one that really stands out is a private show for a white trash theme party at Lake Springfield with Pattern Grey. A guitarist was out so the remaining three of us loaded up the PA and all our gear up in my little Ford Ranger and piled into the front. It was full!

First we setup outside but then rain was coming so we had to tear down and move into a small inside area. We played the entire show without one person acknowledging or clapping. It was horrible.

When we got done, we wanted to get our money and leave. However, when we were packing up, people started stopping by and gave us a lot compliments. We ended up staying for a few hours, got free drinks and food and met a lot of great people. They even sent us home with leftovers…haha.

What’s your current rig?

Fender Rumble 500
Sterling Sub Series (Stingray knockoff)
Korg Blackout Tuner
MXR Bass Compressor
Electric Harmonic Big Muff
