I’ve featured DJ Cummerbund multiple times on Mashup Monday, I can’t help it. I am a huge fan. He just seems to add a little extra flair into his mashups that other mashup artists don’t quite do. I think I have finally pinpointed what that is. In most other mashups, it seems to be finding vocals from one song that will fit with the instrumentals and beat of another song. And there is nothing wrong with that as a lot of my favorite mashups do just that (see The Lone Slim Shady). DJ Cummerbund takes a slightly different approach with his mashups though. He will completely rearrange a lyrical set to another song to the point where he is just about writing a new song. While he also will throw verses of one song on top of the instrumental backing of a another, he will take multiple components of different songs and somehow mend them all together to form something that is completely unique. It pays off. It’s a gamble to take that kind of chance and hope that it works well.

His recent song is a mashup primarily featuring Dio’s Holy Diver, a metal classic, and Ricky Martin’s Livin’ La Vida Loca. Once again two songs that almost have no business being in the same playlist, and yet he makes it work. It starts off with the usual Macho Man cameo and then rips into the Livin’ music with Ronnie James Dio starting to fill in with the lyrics until he gets to the verse, and it stays pretty standard. Verse lyrics/verse instruments, but the chorus takes a bit of a turn. DJ Cummerbund takes various lyric lines from Holy Diver, Livin’ La Vida Loca, and a couple other songs and combines them to form a completely new lyric structure that the original songs did not have. And this kind of technique adds a new layer to the mashup field that can really expand the genre into something more. Other artists featured in the mashup include Black Sabbath, Las Ketchup, and Elk Minister.
