Mashup Battle: DJ Cummerbund vs oneboredjeu

It’s not too often where you will get a mashup battle between two artists, let alone between two of your favorite mashup artists and lucky for me, Christmas came early. If you have read my posts for mashup Monday, you may notice that I find a lot of my mashups from either DJ Cummerbund or oneboredjeu. I should branch out more, but these two just keep coming out with some of the best ones. In this contest, the base song chosen was I Will Wait by Mumford and Sons and as it turns out, it is a versatile song.

DJ Cummerbund

Let’s start with DJ Cummerbund, an artist known for his complex mixes and the always present Macho Man Randy Savage. Primarily, he decided to mash the song up with Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody. It starts off as a standard mashup of the two songs with smooth transitions between the two sets of lyrics, but then the layering starts. First added would be Kesha’s Tik Tok and then, unexpectedly, Avenged Sevenfold’s Bat Country is added to the mix. After the bridge portion, it switches back to Whitney and the expected appearance by Macho Man Randy Savage. There are a couple other surprises in the video and song, but I will leave those for you to see. Overall a really solid mashup and executed only in a way that DJ Cummerbund can do.

Oneboredjeu

Oneboredjeu takes a different approach to mashups than DJ Cummerbund. They choose to take a more simplistic approach to the mashup and keep it between two songs, and add to it a bit by Rick Rolling it. They decide to use Rick Astley’s timeless Never Gonna Give You Up as the flavoring to the Mumford and Sons, and boy does it work well. The timing in putting it together is fantastic and the transitions between the two vocals is as good as it could ever be. This mashup isn’t near as complicated as Cummerbund’s and for some people it makes it a better listen. As always though, that is a matter of preference for the listener.

So, who won? It’s a matter of preference. Music is subjective, and it will always be subjective. People have different tastes and that is just fine. Me personally? I would have to go with DJ Cummerbund on this one. I am always impressed by people’s ability to mash songs together, to be able to listen to a song and connect it with something totally different is a skill that not many people have. It’s one thing for two songs to be mashed together, but to go in and layer metal, pop, folk, and classic Whitney Houston all together takes real talent. So, in this battle DJ Cummerbund walks away with the “W.”

Bonus!!! Oneboredjeu got inspired by this battle and came up with another mashup to I Will Wait and I have to tell you, I like it way more. Had this been used instead of the Rick Astley one, I probably would have picked oneboredjeu as the winner.
