Europe vs Nirvana – Final Teen Spirit

Nothing like the grunge anthem of the 90’s, Smells Like Teen Spirit, to pour on the nostalgia from your childhoods. Being totally honest, I still have no clue what Kurt Cobain is yelling when he breaks into that chorus, it just sounds like a bunch of slurred words but it works. It’s a great song with sweet riffs, a catchy melody, and a drum intro that I am sure most drummers will air-play along to anytime they hear it… well, at least I do. Wax Audio, a mashup channel on Youtube, takes this 90’s classic and throws it in with one of the most popular rock songs of the 80’s, Europe’s The Final Countdown.

I had my first listen to the Final Countdown while in high school pep band. It was an instant hit for me, as I first learned it on trumpet which had the signature synth riff from the song. From there its really just your typical hair metal anthem with a shredding guitar solo and a killer drum fill thrown in for good measure (not to undermine it, it is a really good song).

Wax Audio takes these two seemingly different styles and puts them together in a way I never thought would be possible. Creating mashups is a difficult feat to accomplish and I have the utmost respect for those who are able to do it. I can only imagine the feeling one gets when they hear something and think “you know, that shredding solo would sound great when surrounded by the lyrics and melody of Kurt Cobain.” And man were they right.

Like mashups? Heard of any good ones and want to spread the word? Go ahead and share them on our Facebook page or send it to me at plustalonholmes@fundmc.net.
